The easiest way to monitor your hunting brand is to sign up for Google Alerts. Google Alerts is a free service and all that is required is your email address. Google Alerts crawls the entire web and notifies you when your term has been mentioned. This allows you quickly to view the website your term is appearing and to take action on if needed. Not only can you set up search terms that contain you company name, your product names, your name, but it might also be a good idea to set up alerts on your competitors. This will keep you fully up-to-date with your brand and your competition. Follow these easy steps and you will be monitoring your business on the web in a few minutes.

Visit Google Alerts.

Enter the search terms for you to be alerted on.

Select the type. My recommendation is to select ‘All’.

Select how often you would like to be alerted. I prefer to be alerted as it happens.

Select how many results. Pick 50 to be safe.

Then provide your email address.

To manage Google Alerts, you will need to have profile on Google. Again, free to sign up. Here you can modify your settings to be email alerts of to read them in a feed (ie Google Reader). As hunting business owner or a hunting marketing official, you need to be aware of what is being said and to remedy the situation if it calls for it. This free service makes it very simple to do that.

It’s no secret that we don’t like the way ESPN handles their Outdoors section of their site. The site is old, not maintained, and blogs are months old. So tonight I’m relaxing, drinking a few cold guys, reading my usual hunting sites. Somehow I land on ESPN Outdoors site, in the Hunting section. Right off the bat, I am confused at what I see. I have to double-check that I am indeed on the hunting page of the site. Under the “Headlines” in the right nav, there are links to 4 fishing stories out of a possible 10 links…40% of the hunting headlines are fishing headlines. No mistake about it, I love fishing and love reading fishing articles, when I’m on fishing web pages. Why is there a link to Tournaments? It’s a known fact that a majority of tournaments are all fishing tournaments.

Your Twitter stream is mostly tweets about your field cam, and you are often re-tweeting you field cam statuses, sometimes even responding to yourself. Come on guys, you are suppose to be “The Worldwide Leader In Sports.” You are far from it.

Today was my first post over at www.huntingnet.com. No worries, I will still be maintaining and contributing to FieldJournals.com on a full-time basis. My first article discussed the impact of social media and the hunting industry. Other than my family, hunting and social media are my passion.

You may see me guest post on other hunting sites around the web; you may also see other bloggers posting on FieldJournals. I am a strong advocate for knowledge sharing. We should all be sharing our passions with other outdoors folks to continue this great sport. Tip and tricks, breaking news, articles, blogs, etc., should all be shared across the web. That is ultimately the beauty of the internet and social media — sharing.

Foursquare is a location based social network that allows users to “check-in” to different locations. Users receive points when they check-in to a certain location. The user with the most points for that one location is considered the “Mayor” for that location. When you also check-in, you can view other Foursquare users that are also checked-in at that particular location.

So how can hunters utilize this service. This is a free service that is open to anyone. Obviously you need to have a phone that is GPS enabled and you can download the app to your phone. Here are a few ways for hunters to use Foursquare.

1. Suppose you own your own hunting store. You sell guns, clothing, bullets, and other hunting accessories. Run an advertisement at your store that provides a 25% discount for the person that “checks-in” the most times during the month.

2. If you are an outfitter, have your guests check-in to your ranch/service. Foursqaure automatically provides updates to visitors Twitter and Facebook streams. This will be free advertising for you. Also, run a program similar to the one I described above. Whoever has the most check-in’s in one year, can receive a 10% discount on next year’s hunt.

3. Let’s face it, we all love to go out the woods and hunt. Wouldn’t it be great to find out who is also in the woods with you, and to tell their locations. For example, let’s say I live in Pennsylvania and I am hunting in State Game Lands # 231. Upon entering the woods, I check-in via Foursqaure. Not only does this provide an update to other hunters, it also provides my whereabouts to those not hunting.

Twitter and Facebook are catching on fast for hunter. Foursquare is the next platform for hunters to enjoy.
