Mobile apps must die!
Friday, October 14, 2011 8:58I recently came across an interesting article netmagazine.com discussing the need to no longer focus on native apps, rather focus on mobile apps. As you know, this a position I strongly agree with. There are many limitations with the native app on iOS or Android. HTML5 has more flexibility and more control by the app owners.
Here’s an excerpt from the article:
“Native apps are a remnant of the Jurassic period of computer history, a local maximum that is holding us back. The combination of a discovery service and just-in-time interaction is a powerful interaction model that native apps can’t begin to offer.
No one is close to offering anything like this today. In fact, making this happen is likely going to be a long, slow process. But if we continue to worship native islands of siloed functionality, we aren’t even going to know this is possible. You have to know what you want before you can build it.”
To support this theory, Facebook has been working on an HTML5 app code named Project Spartan. Amazon recently created the Kindle CouldReader in HTML5. Both of these large companies have put a strategy in place to side-step Apple and the App Store rules.
If I’m the owner or CEO of an outdoors website or shop, I would have serious discussions with your management team to decide the appropriate mobile strategy going forward. Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss.
