Android Hunting Apps

Thursday, April 22, 2010 10:37

FieldJournals has compiled a list of our favorite sites that provide hunting applications built on the Android platform from Google.  Feel free to add your favorite apps in the comments section.

AdroLib.com: Great site that has hunting calls, duck calls, waterfowl calls, GPS, etc.

AndroidZoom.com: Site that contains apps for GPS, calls, hunting games, moon information, weather, etc.

AndroidPit: Complete list of all Android hunting apps.  Probably the best list on the web today.  40+ apps listed.

Elk Hunter's Strategy App - http://www.roehuntingresources.com/ElkHuntersStrat... I have a bunch of different apps on my phone. Most are pretty cool ideas - some better than others. Some are a little hokey and look like someone built them in a day just to have "an app" while others (like Primos, Cabelas, and this one – all of which I have) appear to have actually taken some thought and skill to build. The others (like the Cabelas one) I use occasionally, but really not all that often. This one is probably the most unique and is frankly one of my favorites because there is so much to it and you can constantly play around with it and constantly find little gems of information. I also like to have it with me when I sit down with some of the old DVDs I have laying around or if I can find some decent You-Tube videos, I watch the elk and work through scenarios in the app. I think it is making me a better hunter even in the off-season.

Scoutlook & Cabela's Recon Hunt. This can be a lethal combination. Scoutlook has weather radar which shows rain showers, storms etc. Scentzone shows the wind direction for your hunting location up to 72 hours in advance. also shows probable migration routes. Cabela's has a blood tracker, ballistics, compass, gear list, trip tracker, map (so does scoutlook), moon and sun phase and weather.

GoldenPic gives you the sunrise, sunset, weather, blue and golden hours (which varies depending on your GPS coordinates). This is the time deers are most active and travel from their bedding to feeding areas and vice-versa.

Trackback - Hunting Edition for android phones. Tag GPS waypoints for your car, base camp, stand, etc. and navigate back to them whenever needed. Pretty cool.
