Boone and Crockett Club Statement on Lead Bullets

Anti-hunting and anti-fishing interests are currently litigating against the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) to force the EPA to expand its Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) authority in order to regulate traditional ammunition and recreational fishing tackle.

When the Act was established in 1976 Congress explicitly excluded from regulation any article subject to excise taxes — including pistols, revolvers, firearms, shells and cartridges.

The EPA has already once declined a petition that asked the agency to prohibit the manufacture, processing, and distribution in commerce of lead for shot, bullets, and fishing sinkers because it did not have the authority to do so under the TSCA.

Anti-hunting and anti-fishing interests assert the EPA does have the authority and that a lead ban is necessary to address the significant impacts to wildlife populations that are resulting from traditional tackle and ammunition.

The assertions made by the petitioning groups lack credible scientific foundation, especially when seeking a blanket ban on all lead use. Outside of the California condor, where every death is significant, there is no evidence of a lead crisis at the population level – an entire group of one species living in a specific area.

The biggest threat of lead in wildlife is with birds that have gizzards, which hold on to and grind up food, rather than pass it quickly through their systems.

Proponents of the ban cite the impacts on individual raptors, such as Bald Eagles even though raptor populations are increasing across North America and the Bald Eagle was removed from the Endangered Species list as recently as 2007.

If a complete ban on lead in ammunition where achieved it would have a dramatic negative impact, because of the increased cost of alternative metals, on the cost of ammunition, and therefore participation in hunting and recreational shooting, which in turn is the engine that drives most of the funding for conservation and wildlife management through the excise taxes paid on the purchases of ammunition.

Sportsmen groups have rallied to push forward the introduction of the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Protection Act (S.838 & H.R. 1558), which will amend TSCA in a manner that serves to protect and enhance our hunting, recreational shooting and recreational fishing heritage while concurrently facilitating the important benefits that the hunting, shooting and recreational fishing industries contribute to the betterment of our nation’s economy and treasured natural resources.

The Act is now being discussed and considered in committees. To learn more:

Mobile apps must die!

I recently came across an interesting article netmagazine.com discussing the need to no longer focus on native apps, rather focus on mobile apps.  As you know, this a position I strongly agree with.  There are many limitations with the native app on iOS or Android.  HTML5 has more flexibility and more control by the app owners.

Here’s an excerpt from the article:

“Native apps are a remnant of the Jurassic period of computer history, a local maximum that is holding us back. The combination of a discovery service and just-in-time interaction is a powerful interaction model that native apps can’t begin to offer.

No one is close to offering anything like this today. In fact, making this happen is likely going to be a long, slow process. But if we continue to worship native islands of siloed functionality, we aren’t even going to know this is possible. You have to know what you want before you can build it.”

To support this theory, Facebook has been working on an HTML5 app code named Project Spartan.  Amazon recently created the Kindle CouldReader in HTML5.  Both of these large companies have put a strategy in place to side-step Apple and the App Store rules.

If I’m the owner or CEO of an outdoors website or shop, I would have serious discussions with your management team to decide the appropriate mobile strategy going forward.  Feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss.

Press Release: Make The Most of Your Hunt With GoldenPic

Make The Most of Your Hunt With GoldenPic

As the sun begins to peak through the woods, are you ready to start your day? Let GoldenPic (for Android and iPhone) be your one-stop-app for all your times, weather and saved GPS coordinates.
Hunting Theme
Hunting Theme
When it comes to hunting, sunrise and sunset play an important role, but the Golden and Blue Hours are equally as important. This is why hunters everywhere are using GoldenPic (for Android and iPhone) as their one-stop-shop app.

After retrieving your current location (via GPS, cell towers or network location), GoldenPic will display when the blue hours, golden hours, sunrise and sunset will occur for any given date and location in the world. If the selected date is within 4 days, it will even display the weather for you (when available)! GoldenPic is great for planning your next hunting trip, and you can even email the results! While the golden and blue hours are known for bringing the best lighting conditions for a photographer, did you know it can also help hunters?

According to Pa Outdoors (blogger at ForHuntersByHunters), “GoldenPic gives you the blue and golden hours (which change depending on your location) not just sunrise and sunset. This is the period that deer are most active and travel from bedding to feeding areas and vice-versa.” He went on to say, “This is the best android application that I have found for hunting hours and planning your trek to your tree stand in the morning.”

“For hunters in the woods, the black background (or ‘None’ theme) is easy on the eyes for a hunter who is already in the woods or who will be leaving the woods. Most hunting activity is typically at dawn or dusk.”

Some of the great features included in GoldenPic include:

o Five different ways to change the location
o Change dates for future planning
o Email times and data to a friend
o Save GPS coordinates of your favorite locations to reload anytime
o Map to favorite locations (driving or walking directions from Google Maps)
o Sunrise, sunset, golden and blue hours
o Moonrise and moonset times (iOS only)
o Moon phase (iOS only)
o 12 high resolution themes

Chris on the Android Market says, “(I) was really fed up with carrying around game regulations for the sunrise/sunset tables…this app is awesome, for I am a big time bow-hunter. Thanks!”

Even fishermen have gotten in on the action, “ I like it. I’m a big fly fisherman and the national parks only allow fishing one hour before sunrise and one hour after sunset, so this will be handy.” said Alan Holmes.

GoldenPic is available on the Android Market for $1.99 USD and provides five different ways to change the location, it allows you to remember your last location (so you don’t have to keep turning on your GPS each time), allows you to save your favorite locations and it also allows you to email the results to yourself or someone else (maybe to plan your next hunting trip).

Find GoldenPic on the Android Market at:
https://market.android.com/details?id=jebs.goldenpic&hl=en

Find it for the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch on the App Store at:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/goldenpic/id432022860?mt=8

Still not sure if GoldenPic is right for you? Don’t take our word for it, watch this short video to see just how great it really is.

Hunter’s iJournal

The Hunter’s iJournal is designed to store, record and keep your memories and pictures of the hunt and bagged game in a very flexible and customizable app. The most exiting function in this new app is the ability to graph the hunt data results, which allow you to compare season, types of animals bagged, and cross reference to blind or stand location (for example). There’s even a built in report that compares your hunting partner’s bagged game to your bagged game. You can now study when and where you are performing your best in the field. The program is also very useful for guides and high output performers.

Information related to the hunting experience are what hunters enjoy recalling well after the hunt, even years later. This app was designed so you can keep accurate records from the field, but taking it a step further, use that data to know what’s working best, and what’s not. You can even record data for your kids or hunting partner since the system allows for multiple profiles. It’s all backed up to your iTunes application on your desktop as well.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Additional functions include the ability to quickly share the hunt results by sending photos and/or other data to buddies or family through email or through our direct Facebook connect.

This powerful program also allows users to link to our website to provide feedback so future enhancements have features that take you into consideration.

For less than the cost of a box of shotgun shells, the Hunter’s iJournal is a great way to improve the hunt!

FEATURES/INSTRUCTIONS
a.To start, you need to add a hunter profile in the settings screen (or during initial startup). The system affiliates seasons and hunts to a hunter profile, so this is an important step.
b.After the hunter profile is created, go to the Seasons selection at the bottom left of the program screen and add a new hunting season. Seasons can be literal seasons such as “Waterfowl 2010″ or you can also choose to record a major event such as “African Game Hunt, August 2010″ as an example, where you have a mixed bag of game from a very important and memorable event.
c.Within that new season, you can now begin adding new hunts and adding pictures and other data.
d.The Overview section is the most exciting part about this application. You can view pre-made reports and graphs such as:
1.Single Season Performance: Allows you to view bagged game by location for an entire season.
2.Single Season Blind or Stand Analysis: Show me a graph of which blinds or stands are performing better best for bagged game.
3.Compare Seasons: Show me number of bagged game over multiple seasons.
4.Top Ten Hunting Days: Shows a chart or graph of the date, stand/blind and number of animals bagged.
5.Single Species Analysis: You pick the animal, and it will chart number of animals bagged.
6.Single Season Species Analysis: You pick the season, and it will show you the variety of game bagged for the entire season (my personal favorite!).
7.Compare Hunter: Because you can track multiple hunters bagged game, compare performance.

e.You can share elements of the hunt through Facebook, email, twitter. I like to email the hunt to my wife with pictures so she knows I’m bringing home the bacon! We’ve provided multiple ways to share the hunt with friends and family.

f.Be sure to give us your feedback either through the About Us page where you can log into our online website to enter a blog entry (just click on the Hunter’s iJournal graphic) or by going directly online to Hunter’s iJournal on your computer or smartphone browser: http://huntersijournal.com
